Barton has played a significant role in nursing history. Her involvement during the Civil War has influenced many changes and advancements in the nursing profession. Barton, as well as, other volunteers recognized that the sanitary conditions were not acceptable and had an effect on health. Barton also, helped change the perception that women were not to work outside of the home.
In addition, Barton was influential in creating nursing as a respectable profession and influencing the development of training schools for nursing three years after the Civil War (Egenes, 2009).Thanks to Barton and other female volunteers, nursing has evolved. Barton’s persistence has led to the development of public health nursing and occupational nursing (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2008). Without the tireless work of Barton and others, nursing would not be what it is today. Can one imagine working in unsanitary conditions and practicing without any formal education?
