Nursing Then and Now

Nursing’s origin began with service to others and continues today. Therefore, nursing has not as much changed as it has improved. For years, nurses have helped people with their health care needs, emotional needs, as well as, spiritual needs. During Barton’s time, an individual could volunteer their time and services and be considered a nurse. Yet, today it is different. Since the formation of nursing schools, nurses are required to receive a formal education and licensure. Nursing today has become more civilized and socialized with codes of ethics, principles, and values. Despite the advancements, nursing is still based on the foundation of caring.
